Eponomy
"...named for Isabella Abbott of Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University, in recognition of her extensive and skilled studies on marine algre of the Pacific Coast."

According to Gabrielson, Widdowson & Lindstrom (2004: 109, footnote), "P. isabellae and P. profunda are doubtfully distinct species." - (16 August 2006) - G.M. Guiry
"Phycodrys isabellae differs from P. setchellii in having smaller lateral blades, less-prominent midrib and lateral veins, and a thallus of smaller size. It does not closely resemble any other species of Phycodrys." (Norris & Wynne 1969: 145). - (25 August 2015) - M.D. Guiry
