The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hypnea spinella (C.Agardh) Kützing.

According to Haroun & Prud'homme van Reine, 1993: 122) the lectotype (in LD) is herb Ag. 33888, "Vestindien"
