Type species
This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Coolia.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: North Sea: Deswartes, Nieuport, Belgium (Faust & Gulledge 2002: 22). Holotype: (Faust & Gulledge 2002: 22).

Homotypic Synonym(s)
Ostreopsis monotis (Meunier) Lindemann 1928
Glenodinium monotis (Meunier) Biecheler 1952

Nomenclatural notes
Dodge (1982: 147) notes it is possible that Glenodinium obliquum Pouchet (1883) is the same as this species or it may be closely related. This needs further study.

Usage notes
Faust & Gulledge (2002: 23) notes C. monotis is considered toxic. It produces cooliatoxin, a neurotoxin. Please consult original reference for further details. According to Mohammad-Noor et al. (2013: 543, 544), cooliatoxin was described to be produced by C. monotis, as the genus Coolia was assumed to be monotypic at the time (Holmes et al., 1995: fig.1). They note that reexamination of the 6" and 4' plates (their study) and the published micrographs and drawings indicate that the toxic clone was C. tropicalis (Holmes et al. 1995). Harmful species (Lassus et al. 2017).

General environment
This is a marine species.
