Type locality: Unlocalised, probably Sussex, England (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 26). Lectotype: Ellis’s original illustration (pl. XVIII: G) (epitype) (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 26). Notes: Dixon (1960) considered that the type was lost. Maggs & Hommersand (1993: 26) selected as lectotype Ellis’s illustration in pl. XVIII: fig. G.

Following the revision of the delineation of this taxon by Athanasiadis (1996), records of this species from the Adriatic Sea should be considered with caution (Furnari et al., 1999).
