The type species (lectotype) of the genus Phormidium is Phormidium lucidum Kützing ex Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phormidesmis priestleyi (F.E.Fritsch) Komárek, Kaštovský, Ventura, Turicchia & Smarda.
