Type locality: Habitat in mare mediterraneo [Mediterranean Sea] (Desfontaines 1799: 423). Holotype: PC 0146187 (Tronholm et al. 2010: 1313, fig. 8A). Notes: Tronholm et al. (2010: 1313) select GENT FS 338 as epitype (fig. 8B) as epitype of Dictyota implexa (Desfontaines) Lamouroux.
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), dichotomous, having divisions always in pairs (Stearn 1985).

De Clerck (2003) notes that this combination is often erroneously attributed to J. Agardh.
Synonymy (De Clerck (2003)) follows Papenfuss (1944: 338-339).
