Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus pseudovillum (Hollenberg) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Díaz-Tapia, P., McIvor, L., Freshwater, D.W., Verbruggen, H., Wynne, M.J. & Maggs, C.A. (2017). The genera Melanothamnus Bornet & Falkenberg and Vertebrata S.F. Gray constitute well-defined clades of the red algal tribe Polysiphonieae (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales). European Journal of Phycology 52(1): 1-20, 77 figs.

Type locality: Johnston Island: North Island; (INA 1996) Holotype: R.S. Jones; April 22 1965; [Hollenberg 65-52] (INA 1996) Notes: Johnston Atoll, Central Pacific. Holotype: US 61232 (Díaz-Tapia, 2017). H. 65-52, tetrasporic, cystocarpic and spermatangial, growing on dead coral at a depth of 1-2 m and 20 m shoreward from the outer reef margin, north of North I., Johnston I. (Hollenberg, 1968).
Origin of Species Name
Noun (Latin), not like a species named villum.
