The type species (holotype) of the genus Pyramimonas is Pyramimonas tetrarhynchus Schmarda.

Type information
Type locality: "This species was isolated by Dr F. Gross from a plankton sample taken from the sea water off Plymouth [England]. In his records the first culture of 'H' was dated April 1936." (Parke 1949: 256).
