Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Coscinodiscus is Coscinodiscus argus Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Coscinodiscus hajosiae J.Fenner.

Fenner, J. (1985 '1984'). Eocene-Oligocene planktic diatom stratigraphy in the low latitudes and the high southern latitudes. Micropaleontology (New York) 30(4): 319-342, 2 pls, 6 figs.
