Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramothamnion horridulum (P.C.Silva) M.J.Wynne & C.W.Schneider.

Type locality: Guaymas, Mexico.; (Setchell & Gardner 1924: 777) Type: Marchant (no.91); May; Cast ashore among other algae; (Setchell & Gardner 1924: 777) Notes: According to Dawson (1962: 58) the type specimen was collected from material cast ashore at Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico and is now located in Herb. University of California, Berkeley.
