The type species (lectotype) of the genus Membranoptera is Membranoptera alata (Hudson) Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Membranoptera platyphylla (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) Kylin.

Type locality: Moss Beach, San Mateo Co., California, U.S.A.; (Gardner 1926: 209) Holotype: N.L. Gardner No. 4911; April; Growing on rocks in sheltered places at the extreme lower littoral belt.; UC; [266290] (Gardner 1926: 209) Notes: Epilithic in sheltered habitats in the lowest intertidal. UC 284045 cited in Hughey et al., 2017: 41 and in INA [UC number erroneously reported as UC 266290]. Isotype: uC 284046.
