Description: Thallus erect, loriform, the blades faintly veined and with regularly spaced marginal serrations formed from endogenous branches. Indeterminate branches arising from blade margins, occasionally also with proliferous branches growing from the blade surface. Serrations with serrulations forming in an abaxial row. Structure uniaxial; central axes ringed by 5 pericentral cells and 2 dorsal pseudopericentral cells (occasionally also a third pseudopericentral on the ventral side). Lateral alae formed from pericentral cells, with a central medulla 2 cells thick and a cortex of 1–several cell layers. Trichoblasts occasionally formed on the dorsal surface near branch apices, but these soon deciduous and leaving scar cells. Reproductive structures arising on branchlets borne on the thallus margin or surface. Spermatangial branches replacing trichoblasts. Procarps borne on the dorsal side of adventitious branchlets on polysiphonous axes that replace trichoblasts. Cystocarps globose, with a thick pericarp and sterile gonimoblast filaments growing from the fusion cell and forming cell rows on the inside percarp wall. Tetrasporangia formed in stichidia, in 2 rows, tetrahedrally divided.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
