Original publication and holotype designation: Elenkin, A.A. (1933). O sistematicheskom podrazdenii poryadka Chroococcales Geitler (1925). Trudy Botanicheskogo Instituta Akademii Nauk SSSR, Ser. 2, Sporovye Rasteniya 1: 17-21.

Description: Unicellular - colonial; colonies microscopic, +/- spherical or irregularly oval, usually composed from subcolonies, free living (plankton, metaphyton), with +/- narrow enveloping mucilaginous layer. Within colonies is developed a system of parallely and radially oriented tube-like stalks,+/- originating all from the centre of a colony; stalks are +/- thick, later widened as is the width of the cells and causing the radial lamellation of the mucilage (staining !); the stalk system lateral diffluents in the centre. Cells +/- radially elongated, joined to the ends (or within) of stalks, widely oval or slightly obovoid, in old colonies usually very densely, radially agglomerated in the peripheral layer. Cells pale blue-green or yellowish, in 5 species with aerotopes (obligatorily or facultatively).

Comments: Almost all species are planktonic or tychoplanktonic, less metaphytic or epipelic, few are known only from limited areas in the Europe (Scandinavian lakes, clear swamps in central Europe, etc.), from North America or from Himalayas. Three species with obligate possessing aerotopes cause occasional "water blooms" in eutrophic reservoirs, two in temperate zones, one in tropics.
