The pdf originally uploaded (= 1571) faithfully reproduces the original image quality of the figures in pls. 1-2 (Tab. 1-2): in particular, the photograph in pl. 2 (fig. [2]) is very dark, with no details in the black areas. I scanned pl. 2 in an original reprint to render an image with lower contrast: this image reveals additional detail in the dark portions of the photograph (fig, [2]). The low-contrast image is inserted immediately after the plate's image in the original uploaded file. This appended file is labeled "1581b". In another reprint in my possession, the first sheet is inserted backwards (i.e., p. 2 is the first page, with p. [1] on the reverse). Although not explicitly stated in the text, Steele & Neushul's specimens were collected while they were engaged in the 1963 marine phycology class at the Friday Harbor Labs (vide Dawson 1964, "A review of Yendo's ... algae of Port Renfrew.").
