Abstract:
Aphanocladia ecorticata is described as a new species for the South African south coast. Its principal character, distinguishing it from all other species in the genus, is the absence of cortication. In addition, it is of smaller size, especially the maximum diameters of the main axes. There are now six described species of Aphanocladia, and two more taxa in the literature which appear to belong in the genus. Of these, seven occur in regions of the southern hemisphere, and one in the Mediterranean Sea and the adjacent European Atlantic Ocean. This is the first record of the genus in the Indian Ocean.
