Publication Date:
May 15, 1902

Notes:
The pdf 34196b was produced from an original reprint (or "extract") of the article. The plates were challenging to scan because they were printed in a 2-page format (i.e., contiguously across the interior sheet fold). To facilitate scanning, the top and bottom margins of each plate were slightly cropped which has no effect on content because the plate margins are wide. Plates LI-LIV (51-54) are photographs of specimens. Yendo immersed these specimens in alcohol; therefore, they were "bleached" white by the time they were photographed and as a result the original images are very high in contrast with minimal frond surface detail. In scanning these plates, special care was taken to render each plate so that at a minimum it includes all details present in the original. Some fine details are slightly sharper in the scanned images. Plate LVI (56) is a group of drawings of fronds and cross-sections. The original is black ink on paper (i.e., not colored); however, scanning in the color mode provided more subtle shading, giving a more 3-dimensional appearance to the frond drawings. This mode also rendered fine lines in the section drawings (e.g., cell lumen boundaries) much clearer than those in the original. The high quality of the illustrations revealed by scanning Plate LVI shows that these (especially of the cross-section) are perhaps the finest published on coralline algae up to that time, further reinforcing Yendo's place in the Pantheon of Japanese phycologists. There is an error on p. 718: under Cheilosporum MacMillani, reference to "Plate LII" should read "Plate LIII". The publication date was determined by examination of an original copy of vol. 2 in the UC Berkeley Biosciences Library by P. Lebednik. In that copy, on p. xi of the vol. 2 front matter (dates of publication), for part VI the date of March 15, 1902 is printed but "March" is hand over-stamped "May". Collections made at the Minnesota Seaside Station near Port Renfrew. The high-quality 34196b.pdf of Yendo's paper was possible through the generosity of Professor Howard C. Whisler (a highly acclaimed marine mycologist on the faculty of the Botany Department, University of Washington), who, on September 25, 1974, presented his copy of Yendo's reprint as a commemorative gift to Phil Lebednik upon completion of the latter's Ph.D. program. His inscription appears on p. 711 (upper right).
