Abstract:
A new red alga, Schimmelmannia formosana sp. nov. (Acrosymphytaceae, Rhodophyta), is described from the subtropical Taiwan algal flora. Although S. formosana is morphologically most similar to Schimmelmannia elegans and Schimmelmannia plumosa, the auxiliary cell branch pattern in S. formosana appears most similar to that of Schimmelmannia schousboei and Schimmelmannia venezuelensis, with a strongly curved shape. The number of cells in the auxiliary cell branch of S. formosana differs from other species of Schimmelmannia by consistently being composed of six cells; the cell number of the auxiliary cell branch of S. plumosa, S. elegans, S. schousboei and S. venezuelensis is less than six. Schimmelmannia formosana differs from S. elegans by lacking a sterile lateral cell on the supporting cell during the development of the fertilized carpogonium. On the basis of morphological observations, we propose a new taxon, Schimmelmannia formosana sp. nov.
