Abstract:
A planktic species of Aphanizomenon was recorded from a reservoir in Villa Ángela and from a wastewater lagoon in Castelli, Province of Chaco, Argentina, and its taxonomic evaluation was made on the basis of morphological characteristics. This species presented straight trichomes, slightly narrowed towards the ends, elongated vegetative terminal cells, and oval akinetes next to heterocytes. It is similar to Aphanizomenon ovalisporum Forti 1911, Sphaerospermopsis aphanizomenoides (Forti) Zapomlová et al. 2009, Cuspidothrix capricorni (Cronberg et Komárek) Rajaniemi et al. 2005, and Anabaena bergii Ostenfeld 1908, but differs from them by the shape and dimensions of terminal cells, and by the shape and position of akinetes. It is described here as a new species of Aphanizomenon, Aphanizomenon favaloroi Otañ
