Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.
Description: Upright branched polysiphonous thalli, up to 12 cm tall, spongy consistency; monopodial, axes and indeterminate branches clothed with many determinate, senticose branchlets; branchlets exogenously formed on most segments in a 1/4 spiral sequence, distal ends of branchlet divided 1-2(or more) times into 1-several short spine-like branches; unbranched trichoblast borne on branchlet in early stages, young cells of trichoblast pigmented, later becoming colorless and deciduous. 4 pericentral cells, uncorticated. Reproductive structures borne on the determinate lateral branchlets. Tetrasporangia in distal polysiphonous segments of branchlet, 1 per segment which is swollen when sporangia are mature (Krishnamurthy 1962, Chang & Xia 1979). Male capitula short, cylindrical, with blunt ends, replacing trichoblasts in distal end of determinate branchlet (Boergesen 1931, Krishnamurthy 1962). Procarp on suprabasal segment of trichoblast in distal part of determinate branchlet; carpogonial branch 4-celled, attached to supporting cell that also bears two sterile cell groups; cystocarp spheroidal to urceolate (Falkenberg 1901, Krishnamurthy 1962).
Comments: Sublittoral to lower littoral, subtropical to tropical in western Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
