Choristocarpus Zanardini, 1860

Holotype species: Choristocarpus tenellus Zanardini

Description: Lightly pigmented, subdichotomously to irregularly branched epiphytic filaments 1-2 cm tall growing by apical cells, the long-cylindric subapical cells remaining undivided. Vegetative cells containing numerous discoid chloroplasts without pyrenoids. Negative "eau de Javel" reaction. Reproduction by 1-3 celled propagules or unilocular sporangia producing few (16) spores, often borne on the same plants, or plurilocular zoidangia borne on separate plants. Ercegovi_ (1955) described from preserved material large- and small-chambered plurilocs and release of large and small "spores" as well as germination of large "spores" retained within zoidangia.

Comments: Marine, infrequently collected, epiphytic on larger algae from 10-70m depths in the Mediterranean (Adriatic, Gulf of Naples, Corsica) and England.
