Taxonomic note
"The above reported description of the genus Arachnophyllum is drawn by Wynne (2013: 131) modified according the descriptions of thalli of its basionym Nitophyllum confervaceum made by both Meneghini (1841: 425) and Zanardini (1862: 470). It should be noted that the latter author, in his paper above quoted, didn't recognize as distinct the genus Arachnophyllum by himself previously described in 1843. However, De Toni (1900: 671) considered that genus as distinct even though with some doubt on its placement in the subfamily Nitophylloideae. Kylin (1924) didn't treat the genus Arachnophyllum, but at p. 97 reported Ar. confervaceum among "species inquirendae"; later himself (H. Kylin, 1956: 449) reported that genus with a very short description among "little known Delesseriaceae" maintaining it, with doubt, within the subfamily Nitophylleae. Finally, Wynne (2013: 131) in treating that genus pointed out that its placement in the tribe Nitophylleae is arbitrary because both procarps and the structure of cystocarps are unknown." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 479). - (06 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
