Description: Thallus to 25 cm, much branched with 1-3 laterals from each axial cell, the first-formed often becoming indeterminate. Densely corticated below with rhizoids. Cells large, multinucleate. Procarps borne on 3-celled fertile branch borne on sub-terminal cell of lateral branch. Carpogonial branch 4-celled on one (supporting cell) of 2 pericentral cells on subapical cell of fertile axis. Auxiliary cell, cut off from supporting cell, leading to carposporophyte development with clavate, granular carposporangia terminal on massive fusion cell. Involucral branches formed on sterile cells. Spermatangial heads single on short lateral branches. Polysporangia in branch clusters on lateral branches. Differs from other genera of Spondylothamnieae in features of female reproductive system and polysporangia with up to 32 spores.
