Holotype species: Spencerella australis Darbishire

Original publication and holotype designation: Darbishire, O.V. (1896). Spencerella australis, eine neue Florideen-Gattung und -Art. Berichte der deutsche botanischen Gesellschaft 14: 195-200, Plate XIV.

Description: Thallus to 15 cm, slightly flattened, distichously branched, enclosed in dense cellular cortex arising from decussate branchlets developed on each axial cell. Procarp and carposporophyte unknown. Tetraspores in rounded swelling at branch tips, tetrahedrally-divided.
