Description: Minute parasites on Polysiphonia. Internal monosiphonous filaments of parasite, having apical growth between pericentral cells of host; extensively branched and connecting to host pericentral and central cells. Fertile branchlets erect and pushed through outer wall of host, Mature protuberant branch attached by monosiphonous stalk; apical cell of protuberant branch 3-sided producing a determinant structure comprised of a central axis surrounded by fertile laterals of limited growth. Most cells multinucleate. Sporophyte with fusiform branch becoming cylindrical with conical apex. Sporangial branch compound, each lateral a single sporangial branch or a short axis that may branch again 1-2 times; ultimate branches in such systems produce sporangial branches and may develop sporangia appearing to be in 6-7 spiral rows. Meiotic divisions followed by several mitotic divisions of each nucleus resulting in polysporangia. Male reproductive branchlets also compound, laterals of segments either producing spermatangia or branches that repeatedly branch, ultimate cells, spermatangia, covering surface of branch. Female branchlet compound with more somatic cells than in other kinds of fertile branchlets; surface at first covered with uninucleate somatic cells, several carpogonial branches develop amongst them. Procarp consists of supporting cell, two sterile groups and a single 4-celled carpogonial branch; supporting cell serves as auxiliary cell. 1-3 ostiolate, spheroidal cystocarps present on fertile branch.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as masculine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Díaz-Tapia, P., Maggs, C.A., West, J.A. & Verbruggen, H. (2017). Analysis of chloroplast genomes and a supermatrix inform reclassification of the Rhodomelaceae (Rhodophyta). Journal of Phycology 53(5): 920-937, 2 figs.

Comments: A parasite on Polysiphonia caespitosa (Pocock) Hollenberg (Falkenbergiella caespitosa Pocock) in southeastern Africa. Family relationship of Aiolocolax has not been established and its assignment to the Rhodomelaceae is tentative.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
