Pogonophorella P.C.Silva, 1952

Holotype species: Pogonophorella californica (J.Agardh) P.C.Silva

Currently accepted name for the type species: Dasya binghamiae A.J.K.Millar

Original publication: Silva, P.C. (1952). A review of nomenclatural conservation in the algae from the point of view of the type method. University of California Publications in Botany 25: 241-323.

Description: Thallus erect from decumbent axes, sympodially developed and radially organized, pseudodichotomously branched. Indeterminate axes terete and radially producing determinate pseudolateral branch systems from each polysiphonous segment. Pseudolaterals pigmented, monosiphonous throughout, dichotomously branched, deciduous on lower portions of axes, partially deciduous and appearing tufted above. Axial cells surrounded by 5 periaxials which are quickly corticated by short descending rhizoidal filaments, collectively forming a thick cortex.

Dioecious, pseudolaterals of male plants more abundantly branched than cystocarpic or tetrasporic plants. Spermatangia surrounding several successive subterminal cells of pseudolaterals, overall forming organized, simple to branched stichidia with sterile tips. Procarps consist of a 4-celled carpogonial branch and 2 sterile groups of cells borne on the supporting cell. Carposporophytes formed on short branches of main axes surrounded by large, corticated pericarps. Three tetrahedral sporangia produced in successive whorls forming curved-conical to lanceolate stichidia with single-celled stalks, clustered on pseudolaterals..

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
