Description: hallus robust, axis monopodial, irregularly and distichously branched, each cell with 4(3) determinate branchlets in 2 unequal pairs. Each branchlet pinnately or quaternately branched from central rachis. Indeterminate axes corticated except at branch apices with rhizoidal filaments borne on basal cells of determinate branchlets. Cells uninucleate. Gland cells lacking. Sexual plants unknown. Tetrasporangia, with or without stalk cells, tetrahedrally-divided. Boreothamnion shares some features with each of several tribes of Ceramiaceae but, until female reproductive features are known, is tentatively placed in Ptiloteae due to its resemblance to Tokidaea in several features.
