Description: Spherical unicell surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Cell diameter 8.5-17.0 um (excluding sheath) up to 30 um with sheath. Single chloroplast with lobes radiating from a slightly eccentric pyrenoid. Olive green to grayish green in colour. A peripheral limiting thylakoid is always present adjacent to the chloroplast envelope. Pyrenoid is traversed by thylakoids lacking phycobilisomes. Dictyosomes always perinuclear. Peripheral endoplasmic reticulum tubule system present along entire cell circumference just inside plasmalemma. Usually one nucleus/cell. Pair of nucleus-associated organelles (NAO) with ring morphology present. Metaphase nucleus with a single large gap in the nuclear envelope at each pole. Asexual reproduction presumably by binary fission. Sexual reproduction unknown.
