Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Kylin, H. (1956). Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen. pp. i-xv, 1-673, 458 figs. Lund: C.W.K. Gleerups.

Nomenclatural note
Chaetangium Kützing 1843 nom. rej. vs Suhria J.G. Agardh ex Endlicher 1843 nom. cons. (Index Nominum Genericorum). According to Tronchin et al. (2002: 555), the maintenance of Suhria as a monotypic genus is not warranted and it should be reincorporated into Gelidium. - (14 October 2010) - G.M. Guiry

Taxonomic note
According to Schneider & Wynne (2007: 205) this is a synonym of Nothogenia Montagne. They note that Parkinson (1983) discussed nomenclatural problems with Chaetangium and argued for the re-adoption of Nothogenia. - (14 October 2010) - G.M. Guiry
