Description: Thallus erect, cylindrical, to 50 cm high, simple or with a few branches from near the base. Attached to the substratum, which is often sand-covered rock, with a small discoid holdfast. Medulla multi-stranded, with the original longitudinal filaments largely obscured by branched hyphal filaments. Cortex consisting of a dense cover of 1-4 times branched straight assimilatory filaments, phaeophycean hairs, and reproductive organs. Unilocular sporangia ovoid to pyriform, borne at the base of assimilatory filaments. Plurilocular sporangia elongate-ovoid to conical, divided into irregularly positioned locules when mature, borne on mid to basal cells of assimilatory filaments. Life history not known. Endemic to southern Australia.
