Holotype species: Compsopogonopsis leptoclados (Montagne) V.K.Krishnamurthy

Currently accepted name for the type species: Compsopogon caeruleus (Balbis ex C.Agardh) Montagne

Original publication and holotype designation: Krishnamurthy, V. (1962). The morphology and taxonomy of the genus Compsopogon Montagne. Journal of the Linnean Society of London, Botany 58: 207-222.

Description: Profusely and repeatedly branched, bluish to olive-colored, uniseriate filament with older parts corticated. Cortex initiated by rhizoid-like outgrowths, generally 1 layer but occasionally 2 or more. Thalli to 20-40 cm long and 0.5-1.0 mm diam. Cortical cells 22-51 x 19-55 µm, containing several peripheral discoid chloroplasts. Monosporangia produced by cortical and uncorticated axial cells. Monospores germinate into a few-celled mass, one cell of which divides into the erect filament and the others contribute to the holdfast. Sexual reproduction not observed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
