Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Grateloupia.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Wang, H.-W., Kawaguchi, S., Horiguchi, T. & Masuda, M. (2000). Reinstatement of Grateloupia catenata (Rhodophyta, Halymeniaceae) on the basis of morphology and rbcL sequences. Phycologia 39: 228-237.

Taxonomic note

Using Western Pacific material, Li & Ding (1998) established the new genus Sinotubimorpha based upon S. porracea (Kützing) Li & Ding, with the basionym of Grateloupia porracea Kützing, with a type locality of the West Indies (Kützing, 1843). Later, Wang et al. (2000) showed that the Western Pacific material that had gone under the names Grateloupia porracea and Sinotubimorpha porracea is not the same as genuine G. porracea from the West Indies, and they reinstated the name Grateloupia catenata Yendo for the western Pacific material.

According to provisions in the Code, the genus Sinotubimorpha remains typified by the West Indian G. porracea Kützing, not by the western Pacific material used by Li & Ding (1998) in their description of the genus.
