Description: Thalli unicellular or colonial and microscopic, comprised of 2-4-8 cells embedded in ellipsoid mucilage envelope. Cells 25-57 x 5-21 µm, fusiform, and more-or-less strait with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts in young cells discoid to band shaped, in older cells fusing to form a parietal plate with 1-4 pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2, 4 or 8 spores in a series, released by rupture of sporangium. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Genus included in Elakatothrix or Ankistrodesmus by some authors.
