Diplochloris Korschikov, 1939

Holotype species: Diplochloris decussata Korschikov

Original publication and holotype designation: Korshikov, A.A. (1939). Contribution to the algal flora of the Gorky District Phytoplankton of the Oka River in August 1932. Zapiski Gorkovskogo Universiteta 9: 101-128.

Description: Occasionally solitary, but more commonly paired cells aggregated in colonies with cell pairs widely dispersed in mucilaginous matrix. Cells 3-10 x 0.5-2.5 µm, elongate and spindle shaped to fusiform, or curved and s-shaped to lunate with rounded ends; one species with oval cells. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal; pyrenoids absent. Asexual reproduction by autospore formation and colony fragmentation; 2 (rarely 4) spores per sporangium, formed in parallel. Spore release by dissolution of spore wall or variously located tears. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Diplochloris planktonic in freshwater ponds, lakes and rivers; species rarely reported and generally with highly localized (endemic?) distributions in central Europe including Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. Genus considered closely related to Ankistrodesmus and Selenastrum from which it differs based on autospore number, occurrence of mucilage and much smaller cell sizes. According to Marvan and others (1984) nomenclatural problems are associated with D. ovalis, and the anomalous D. hortobagyi with pyrenoids and apiculate terminal processes should be assigned to Didymogenes in Scenedesmaceae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
