Original publication and holotype designation: Skuja, H. (1939). Beitrag zur Algenflora Lettlands II. Acta Horti Botanici Universitatis Latviensis 11/12: 41-169.

Description: Ovoid or cylindrical, unflattened, rigid, strongly keeled cells, with one emergent flagellum, held anteriorly and highly mobile during rapid swimming; colorless, osmotrophic, with abundant paramylon grains of various shapes; cells mostly small (ca. 25 _m long) though the type may reach 45 _m. Regarded by Pringsheim (1963) as colorless derivatives of Lepocinclis but Christen (1962b) finds this unlikely. Rare; freshwater, acidic habitats, especially ponds and ditches with decaying vegetation; recorded from Latvia, France, Switzerland and the Ukraine.
