Description: Colorless, phagotrophic flagellates, with no special ingestion organelle visible by light microscopy (no EM studies, as yet); 2 emergent flagella, unequal, heterodynamic, the longer directed straight, anteriorly during swimming, the shorter trailing posteriorly; cells rigid, (15)30-60 _ (10)20 _m, moderately flattened, with several (4-10) pronounced helical keels. Apart from being less flattened and more obviously ridged, there seems to be little to separate this genus from Notosolenus, though it is accepted by Huber-Pestalozzi (1955), Bourrelly (1970), Starmach (1983) and others. Freshwater and marine; Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
