Description: Frustules rectangular in girdle view, while valves elliptical, lanceolate to nearly linear when longer. Post-sexual specimens 15–75 µm long and 5.4–10 µm wide. The striae uniseriate, continuous, and areolae covered by branched volae. Sternum indistinct. Fascia common on the valves, extending across either the transverse or transapical axes. Central internal costae highly thickened. Sometimes, internal virgae near the apices as well thickened. Solid siliceous spines on the virgae along the valve margin present. The apices of the valves terminate in apical pore fields, which extend from the valve face onto the mantle. Pores on these apical pore fields are usually surrounded by external siliceous rims and spines over the majority of the pore field ("crown pores"). Internal pores in the APFs plain. The valvocopula is deep, and hyaline. The copulae thin and bear a single row of pores.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
