Amphichrysis Korshikov, 1929

Holotype species: Amphichrysis compressa Korshikov

Original publication and holotype designation: Korshikov, A.A. (1929). Studies on the Chrysomonads I. Archiv für Protistenkunde 67(2): 253-290, 1 figure, plates 8-11.

Description: Ellipsoid to ovoid unicells, more or less flattened in the longitudinal axis, bearing a single emergent flagellum. Protoplast with prominent nucleus, 2 Golgi bodies, 2-4 contractile vacuoles, 4 chloroplasts, and 1-4 stigmata. Chloroplasts usually flanked laterally by masses of chrysolaminaran. Reproduction by longitudinal division of the cell. Formation of stomatocysts preceded by secretion of temporary envelope and mucilage round the cell. Several authors believe Amphichrysis represents a double Chromulina possessing several paired organelles (chloroplasts, stigmata, Golgi bodies, contractile vacuoles), whereas nucleus and flagella apparatus are thought to be fused. In freshwater, very rare, in Europe and North America. A marine, bloom-forming occurrence in Egypt (Labib 1992) should be re-examined.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
