Description: Barrel-shaped cells with wall and with 1-2 chloroplasts, arranged in branched filaments. Reproduction by biflagellate swarmers, 4-16 formed in each of a number of special swollen cells. Swarmer has 2 unequal flagella, 1-2 chloroplasts and a stigma. Sexual reproduction unknown. Stomatocysts known from one species (A.pyrenigerum). Benthic phases of certain prymnesiophytes appear very similar, but they produce Hymenomonas swarmers. Both marine and freshwater: distribution uncertain. Much doubt persists about this genus and its relationship to the Chrysophyceae or to the Prymnesiophyceae. This complicated situation already started at the description of the type species, because the observations of swarmers were doubtful, and the author admitted that the drawing of swarmers was wrong. It might even have been a phaeophyte stage (see Bourrelly, 1957).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
