Original publication and holotype designation: Focke, R. (1957). Atraktochrysis rotans nov. gen., nov. spec., eine neue koloniebildende Ochromonadale. Revue Algologique, Nouvelle Serie 2: 239-245.

Description: Colonies of more or less spherical cells, with 2 unequal flagella, one parietal chloroplast and large stigma. Cells arranged rather loosely at the periphery of a wide mucilaginous matrix. Colony oblong to spindle-shaped, up to 700 &m long, able to move forward in a rotating path. Cells also able to move slowly within the mucilage. Reproduction and stomatocysts unknown. Reported from freshwater fish farms in Germany.
