Description: Unicellular - colonial; solitary cells or (rather) dense aggregations or groups and/or pseudofilamentous rows of cells, not polarized (only initial stages), spherical or irregular, polygonal with rounded ends, sometimes slightly flattened from sides and of different size, enveloped by thin, firm, layered, colorless sheath (envelope). End cells in pseudofilaments or solitary cells sometimes club-shaped. Cell content blue-green, olive-green or reddish, with solitary granules. Chromatic adaptation. Irregular cell division in different planes in successive generations, sometimes with later division prevailing in one plane (formation of pseudofilaments); enlarged cells divide occasionally into large numbers (-64) of nanocytes, which are liberated by an opening from mother enveloping sheath. Periphytic on stones in clear stagnant water (lake littorals) and in streams, usually in mountains. Marine species not revised.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
