Description: Cell surrounded by a lorica constructed of fine cellulose fibrils. Lorica roundish or more bottle-shaped. The basal part is of a double construction, the outer part is ringshaped and surrounds an algal filament (Kristiansen 1972). The cell is globular, fastened to the bottom of the lorica, with one or 2 chloroplasts and 2 basal contractile vacuoles. It has a branched rhizopodium emergent from the lorica, but a single flagellum is also reported. Reproduction by longitudinal division, one daughter cell leaves the lorica as a swarmer and constructs its own lorica, while moving round an algal filament. Stomatocysts globular. Sexual reproduction not observed. Nutrition both phototrophic and phagotrophic. Widely distributed in freshwater, epiphytic on filamentous algae.
