Description: Cells occurring in 2 stages. In the colonial stage, thebiflagellate cells are immobile, surrounded by a dense common mucilage. In the motile stage, the cells are solitaryswarmers. The cell has 2 flagella with their bases at a wideangle, the longer hairy, and the smooth flagellum which is transformed into a photoreceptor in juxtaposition to the stigma. There are 3 microtubular roots, not 4 as in almost all other chrysophytes. Cell division with intact nuclear envelope. The light harvesting pigments include fucoxanthin and also asteraxanthin, which is unique . Reproduction by division both in the mobile and theimmobile stage. Stomatocysts unknown. In freshwater, only found in the type locality (England).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
