Description: Unicellular flagellates with two unequal flagella. Cells ovoid with convex dorsal side and flat or slightly concave ventral side. Front end pointed or rostrate. Cells wall-less with parietal chloroplast containing dorsal stigma and 1-3 pyrenoids. Contractile vacuole also present. The two flagella are inserted ventrally, ca one third of the cell length from the anterior end. Long flagellum trailing. Cells frequently attach to the substratum by an extensible proboscis from the front end. Thus fixed the cells may move vigorously around the point of attachment. Sexual reproduction unknown. M. collorhynchus is known only from the original description, occurring in a canal and in small puddles in Britain. In its flagellation it shows some similarity to Nephroselmis, but in the absence of ultrastructural studies the phylogenetic affinities remain obscure

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
