Description: Thalli unicellular but often gregarious, comprised of spherical to ovoid cells with apical end towards substratum, attached by long narrow stipe to 20 µm long. Cells spherical to ovoid, often narrowing to point at base, 4-13 x 4-10 µm with apical end downward. Cells with smooth cell walls, with or without stigma but with one or two anterior contractile vacuoles. Cells with anterior nucleus; single chloroplast posterior or lateral, cup-shaped and parietal, with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores; 2, 4, or 8 per spoangium and ellipsoid, egg-shaped or elongate, often with pointed anterior. Zoospores 7-10 µm long, attache to substratum by anterior end. Sexual reproduction apparently known in one species but poorly described. Stylosphaeridium in freshwater, epiphytic and epizoic on planktonic organisms especially mucilaginous cyanobacteria; reported from Europe and North America, although only S. stipitatum known from North America. Taxonomic affinities unclear though genus differ from Stylosphaeridiella only by presence of biflagellate cells. Species of genus distinguisghed by differences in cell size and shape, presence or absence of stigmata, details of chloroplast morphology and host identity.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
