Malleochloris Pascher, 1927

Holotype species: Malleochloris sessilis Pascher

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1927). Die Süsswasser-Flora Deutschlands, Österreichs und der Schweiz. Volvocales = Phytomonadinae. Vol. 4 pp. 505. Jena: Fischer.

Description: Thalli unicellular, surrounded by a thin reddish sheath, this expanded at basal end to form conspicuous mucilagnous pad about one third long and as wide or wider than cell. Cells subspherical, 8-15 x 12 µm with smooth cell walls and two apical contractile vacuoles. Stigma present in young cells, disappearing with age. Cells with central nucleus; single chloroplast parietal and cup-sphaped with single pyrenoid Asexual reproduction by division of protoplast into 2-4 quadriflagellate zoospores. Zoospores ellipsoid with apical stigma and basal cup-shaped chloroplast. After short swimming period, zoospores attach by apical end and retract flagella and secrete basal pad. Sexual reproduction isogamous; gametes produced by division of vegetative cell into 8 or 16 quadriflagellate gametes. Gametes more egg-shaped compared to zoospores slightly pointed apex. Planozygotes with 8 flagella remain motile for considerable period before losing flagella, becoming spherical, and forming roughened cell wall. Site of meiosis not described, presumably occurring prior to zygote germination. Thalli usually epiphytic on species of Cladophoraceae in freshwater; reported from Europe and North America. Genus considered close to Chlorangiella which forms biflagellate zoospores but ultrastructural studies not yet carried out.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
