Granulocystopsis Hindák, 1977

Holotype species: Granulocystopsis pseudocoronata (Korshikov) Hindák

Currently accepted name for the type species: Granulocystopsis decorata (Svirenko) P.M.Tsarenko

Original publication and holotype designation: Hindák, F. (1977). Studies on the chlorococcal algae (Chlorophyceae). I. Biologicke Práce 23: 1-192.

Description: Thalli to unicellular or in 2-4-8 celled colonies embedded in expanded sporangial cell wall. Colonies to 50 µm. Cells 4.5-19 x 1.6-9 µm, oval, with or without truncated ends, with prominent polar ring of granulations, occasionally with polar thickenings and equatorial ring. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts parietal and single in young cells, up to four when mature, each plastid with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2-4 (-8) per sporangium. Autospores retained for some time within the expanded mother but ultimately released by rupture of the mother cell wall after considerable swelling of sporangium. Wall granulations few in young cells, deposition occurring with maturation. Granulocystoptis planktonic in freshwater, reported from Europe, Ivory Coast and Peru. Genus similar to Granulocystis and Oocystis. Species distinguished based on cell size and shape and details of wall granule arrangement.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
