Description: Cells solitary, very rarely in 4-celled colonies within persistent mother cell walls. Cells (4-) 7-14 x 2-4.5 µm, strongly lunate with a deep incision and broadly rounded apices. Cell walls roughened with irregular granulations which are often brownish, granulations denser on dorsal side of cell. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with one large pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores, (2-) 4 (-8) per sporangium, released by rupture of mother cell wall. During autospore formation the cell expands in size and retains its shape. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Juranyiella planktonic in eutrophic freshwater; reported from Czechoslovakia, France and Hungary. Genus similar to Nephrochlamys but differs in formation of large granulations on cell walls and presence of a pyrenoid; similar to Raphidocelis but differs in presence of a pyrenoid and the expansion of the mother cell wall prior to autospore release. The genus variously assigned to subfamilies Chlorelloideae or Oocystoideae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
