Chaetonella Schmidle, 1901

Holotype species: Chaetonella goetzei Schmidle

Description: Very small (almost microscopic), uniseriate, branched alga; free-floating or attached to mucous or larger algae. Branches attenuate, terminal cells longer than others. Cells cylindrical to somewhat irregular in shape, 6-8 um in diameter, almost as long as broad. Nuclei 2-5 per cell. Chloroplast single and parietal, without pyrenoids. Reproduction apparently by zoospores formed by intercalary cells. No orher method of reproduction known.

Comments: Chaetonella known only from freshwater habitats in tropical Africa and England. Its taxonomic status is uncertain due to lack of detailed study. West suggests that it may be better referred to Chaetophorales.
