Description: Thalli unicellular or joined in 2-4-8 celled colonies. Cells attached at one end to substratum or secondarily planktonic. Cells17-50 x 1.5-4 µm, fusiform, lunate, curved or sigmoidal with basal end elongated and both ends pointed. Cell walls smoth, without mucilage envelopes. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal; pyrenoid absent. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2-4 per sporangium; spores formed in parallel and released by longitudinal rupture of parental wall. Flagellated cells and sexual reproduction unknown. Podohedriella subaerially on damp wood or in forest pools; known only from Europe. Genus similar to Podohedra but distinguished based on absence of pyrenoids.
