Oestrupia Heiden ex Hustedt, 1935

Lectotype species: Oestrupia powelii (F.W.Lewis) Heiden

Original publication: Hustedt, F. (1935). Untersuchungen über den Bau der Diatomeen. X. Die sogenannten "Längslinien" in der Schalenstruktur pennater Diatomeen. XI. Strukturtypen in der Gattung Diploneis. Bericht der Deutschen Botanischen Gesellschaft 53(1): 3-41, 2 pls.

Description: Cells solitary, free. Valves linear, lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, sometimes slightly constricted; valve face often strongly convex. Raphe straight, sometimes raised above rest of valve due to convexity of valve. Central area distinct; axial area variable in width on either side of raphe. Transverse striae coarsely punctate; striae interrupted by longitudinal siliceous rib or ribs into one or more segments. The presence of longitudinal siliceous ribs on the valve face distinguishes Oestrupia from Caloneis and Pinnularia. Oestrupia has been recorded in marine, brackish and fresh waters.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
